Dead Man’s Cove

by Lauren St John

The Story

Orphaned Laura discovers she has a mysterious uncle in Cornwall. She is taken to live in his dark Victorian villa with its strange housekeeper, Mrs Webb.

The North Star Grocery has the very freshest produce in St Ives, and is owned by Mr and Mrs Mukhtar, who have a son, Tariq. Tariq is supposedly home schooled, so Laura finds it odd that he doesn’t he speak English. Laura soon figures out that something fishy is going on.

It’s the same with her puzzling uncle Calvin Redfern; is he really working for the Fisheries Board? Even though Mrs Webb is an amazing cook, is she hiding something? Is Skye the Siberian husky with one missing leg, whose home is being threatened, really something special? Why are there random messages lying around for Laura to find? And most of all, why is everyone so afraid of Dead Man’s Cove?

My Thoughts

This book is a whirlwind of adventure and has many exhilarating twists. It has a quite unusual story line which makes the plot surprising. The moral of the story is to always treat people equally no matter their background, which is such an important message.
