The Story
Cosmo, a Golden Retriever in North Carolina, loves his family, Mum, Dad, twelve year-old Max and five-year old Emmaline, more than anything in the world. Cosmo adores ruining tennis balls, ripping up toilet paper and protecting Max and Emmaline doggedly. When each child was born, that was the promise that Cosmo made: to love Max and, shortly afterwards, Emmaline tenaciously. Cosmo has never broken his promise. Ever. And he never, ever will.
When Cosmo realises that his family are falling apart, as Mum and Dad announce their divorce, it is up to Cosmo to keep guard over the children. But Cosmo needs help. Because, after all, Cosmo is a Golden Retriever.
Cosmo and Max can’t even contemplate never seeing each other again… They have a very risky plan to be able to stay together but, with Cosmo’s arthritis and Max’s nervous demeanour, will it work?
My Thoughts
I so enjoyed I, Cosmo. It made me laugh, smile and really want to dance. My favourite line, which really tickled me, was, “Sometimes when I listen – really listen – I discover extraordinary things. Like the fact that trees are alive, and that sheepdogs are not crossed with sheep, as I’d previously thought.” Cosmo is permanently perplexed by humans. Why would Max have to read the book To Kill a Mockingbird when tracking a scent should be such a simple task and certainly shouldn’t require a manual. It is really incredible that Carlie Sorosiak has been able to create such a gripping book, especially when told from a dog’s point of view. This book will capture all ages with its comical storyline.
