The Matilda Effect

by Ellie Irving

The Story

Matilda aged 12 is absolutely obsessed with science, and dreams of becoming an inventor one day.  So when her school has a competition for the greatest invention, Matilda knows she has to win.  For many hours she prepares her invention called the ‘Handy handy hand’ which she made for her Grandfather before he passed away.

On the day of the competition Matilda knows the ‘Handy handy hand’ will definitely win, although her hopes are ruined when the winner is announced and she does not win, but a boy named Thomas Thomas claims the prize.  Matilda is accused of cheating and not doing the work on her invention herself!

That night Matilda is fuming, so when she goes to visit her Granny Joss at the Care Home, she soon discovers that Granny Joss discovered her own planet, though as she was a lady in a man’s world, she did not get any of the credit.  Granny’s boss Professor Smocks was a spiteful man and stole her discovery: worse still he is about, in two day’s time, to receive the Nobel Prize in Sweden.

Matilda knows that she cannot let the Professor take the Award.  It is just like the Thomas Thomas drama all over again!

Can Matilda and Granny Joss reach the Award Ceremony when neither of them have passports or money before it is too late?

My Thoughts

This book shows you that it is important to treat everybody in the same way, and also to make sure you are not greedy and want to claim everything for yourself.

This book gives you fits of laughter and you really feel you are with Matilda and Granny Joss on their adventure across Europe.
