The Story
Reynie, Kate, Sticky and Constance all have something in common. Somewhat alone, but brilliant minded, the four children pass a series of mind-boggling tests set by the mysterious Mr Benedict. Mr Benedict is seeking the very brightest team to risk everything to save the world. The children come to face an evil man who has set upon the mission of conquering people’s minds for his own ends.
Mr Benedict’s associates Rhonda Kazembe, Milligan and Number Two (dressed in yellow and eating peanuts or pickles) are there to help, with secret messages and protection. Especially as Mr Benedict has narcolepsy and could fall asleep at any moment.
My Thoughts
My favourite part of the book is discovering the challenges the children face in the selection process. It is fun to see if you can crack the code yourself. The author experiments with many different codes and puzzles and the story has many twists and turns.
My favourite character is Kate, who is ever resourceful with her bucket of life-saving equipment and ever determined and brave to save her friends. I also love Reynie’s considerate nature and persistence and Sticky’s encyclopaedic knowledge and nervous demeanour. And despite Constance’s toddler tantrums and grumpy nature, she ultimately saves the day.
