by Malorie Blackman

The Story

Desperate to save his son, Cameron’s father gets in touch with Dr Bryce, who has discovered a controversial new transplant procedure using pig’s hearts. Dr Bryce has a pig called Trudy who is perfect for the job.

On the date the surgery is due to take place, Cameron is petrified. It really is a situation of life or death. Thankfully the operation goes well. Before long Cameron can play football with his friends and sprint up the stairs without gasping for breath. Fighting fit, Cameron decides to join his friends at the swimming pool, without Dr Bryce’s permission, for dare devil dives to the deep. Can Cameron’s new heart cope with the challenge? Or does something dangerous lie ahead…

My Thoughts

I was glued to this book as I so wanted to know whether Cameron would survive. It is also thought provoking to consider whether animals should be used to save human lives. Such an experimental procedure certainly attracts a lot of public attention in the story and watching Cameron cope with the intense media pressure is another interesting aspect to consider.
