The Story
Shif loves nothing more than spending time with his greatest friend Bini, chess and maths. However, when soldiers swarm his small city all the happiness is drained from his world. Shif’s father, he believes, died many years ago but soon the truth is revealed. Shif’s father was captured by the military when asking for a pay rise as a well educated university lecturer. Soon the military take Shif and Bini prisoners too. They are forced to leave their mothers and Shif’s little sister Lemlem to embark on a journey to a prison camp in the middle of the dry desert where many prisoners who have done nothing wrong are cramped into shipping containers with holes made by bullets fired into the sweltering hot sides so they can breathe. Although in the desolation lies hope to escape even if it means losing people on the way.
My Thoughts
This book makes you realise how many people are suffering in countries where they cannot speak freely and how many people are trying to escape as refugees in search of a better life. I was glued to this book and it will capture you too with thrill, adventure and sadness. I loved this book so much and hope there is a sequel!
