The Bubble Wrap Boy

by Phil Earle

The Story

Charlie Han has lived his life as the smallest boy in his school with no freedom. He cannot go to the park or see his friends without his mum knowing EXACTLY what he is doing. At the age of 14, all Charlie wants is to be able to ride a bike, not the tricycle that he got after years of begging, and maybe just to grow a foot or two taller? Charlie does not have any friends except Sinus, the kid who stares at walls all day, scribbling in his private notebook. Until one day, when Charlie is delivering orders from his dad’s Chinese takeaway, he sees a boy zooming down the road, doing tricks and flicks on a skateboard. Charlie falls in love with skateboarding, but how can he get a board, and practice without his mum seeing? Charlie will have to practice in secret. And what is the secret that his mum is trying to protect him from?

My Thoughts

This book is really good fun. I enjoyed Charlie’s ambition to try skateboarding and the way in which friends can help you succeed! My favourite character is Dora. Telling you who she is would spoil the book but Dora has a silent ambition even when things take a turn for the worst.
